Build an HDR robot

by sbrothier
Students studying the Graduate Diploma of Advanced 3D Production course from New Zealand's (Auckland) Media Design School have built a robot which allows a DSLR camera to take 360 degree panoramic HDRIs. In 3D packages these images are shown to effectively simulate realistic settings and lighting effects.

Open Camera Controller Introduction

by sbrothier & 2 others, 1 comment
The OCC project arose from our need to shoot HDR images for film production using Canon cameras. Canon has stubbornly chosen to stick to its standard 3-shot method for bracketing shots - one metered shot and two additional shots one or two stops above and below the metered shot. For texture shooting, it is sometimes necessary to shoot 5,7,9 or even 11 or more stops of bracketing around the metered exposure. We’ve since found that the OCC system can work with other brands like Olympus and Sigma cameras.

le lab : Droplet : 5D et DXA -> ProRes 422

by sbrothier

Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki for 5D Mark II

by sbrothier (via)
Magic Lantern is an open platform for developing enhancements to the amazing Canon 5D Mark II full frame digital SLR. This camera is a "game changer" for independent film makers: * It allows the use of a wide range of lenses (anything that can be adapted to the EF mount). * The 35mm full-frame sensor is larger than the RED ONE's sensor, Super 35 film. It is approximately the size of VistaVision. This means shallower native depth-of-field than anything on the market, except for the Phantom 65. * The dynamic range and latitude are close to the capabilities of high-end HD cameras. * The low-light performance is currently unrivaled, even by the RED ONE.

Fraser Speirs – On the Flickr support in iPhoto ‘09

by sbrothier (via)
As you may know, Apple added Flickr uploading to iPhoto ‘09. As you may guess, I was a little perturbed at this since I pay my mortgage by selling, er, a Flickr upload plugin for iPhoto. I acquired my copy of iLife ‘09 yesterday and decided to dive deep on how Apple have implemented Flickr integration in iPhoto ‘09. Here are the results of my investigation. Be aware as you read that this is the result of a morning’s click-around investigation and not months of serious use. I will do my best to give an honest assessment of what is in iPhoto ‘09, and you’ve already read my full disclosure in the previous paragraph.

Tinrocket, LLC | HyperDither

by sbrothier & 1 other
HyperDither is an OS X image processing utility that converts color or grayscale images to 1 bit black & white using a sophisticated dithering routine. Specifically, HyperDither implements the “Atkinson” dithering filter. Years ago, during the development of the first Macintosh, Bill Atkinson (of HyperCard, QuickDraw, MacPaint & now nature photography fame) discovered a very elegant dithering filter to convert greyscale image data for the 1 bit black & white Mac video display. The dithering produced by this routine was much higher quality than the now-a-days ubiquitous Floyd-Steinberg or “Error-diffusion” filter (used by QuickTime, PhotoShop).

Lense.fr / IMPROVE: Le bleu du ciel est-il bleu ciel ?

by sbrothier
