Whether or not you like parallaxing sites is one thing, but what you can say pretty confidently is that they’re a black hole of performance. The reason for this is that browsers tend to be optimized for the case where new content appears at the top or bottom of the screen when you scroll (depending on your scroll direction) and, in general terms, the browsers work best when very little changes visually during a scroll. For a parallax site that’s rarely the case since many times large visual elements all over the page change, causing the browser to do a repaint of the whole page.

Dedicated Web Workers provide a simple means for web content to run scripts in background threads.  Once created, a worker can send messages to the spawning task by posting messages to an event handler specified by the creator. The worker thread can perform tasks without interfering with the user interface.  In addition, they can perform I/O using XMLHttpRequest (although the responseXML  and channel attributes are always null).

Lazy Load Plugin for jQuery

Lazy Load is a jQuery plugin written in JavaScript. It delays loading of images in long web pages. Images outside of viewport (visible part of web page) wont be loaded before user scrolls to them. This is opposite of image preloading. Using Lazy Load on long web pages containing many large images makes the page load faster. Browser will be in ready state after loading visible images. In some cases it can also help to reduce server load.

Devenues un passage obligé dans tous les tests de ce type de produits, elles sont un élément comparatif crucial pour séparer le bon grain de l’ivraie. Dans ce domaine, certaines brillent davantage que d’autres et Firefox, que ses extensions ont rendu célèbre, doit être bousculé pour s’adapter. Mozilla prépare donc notamment une nouvelle machine JavaScript et va chercher son inspiration ailleurs.

Afin de le démontrer, Mozilla a effectué un premier test avec Firefox sur TraceMonkey et a comparé les performances avec Chrome en se servant d’une solution de “benchmarking” du nom de SunSpider. Selon la société, Chrome fut 28% plus lent sous WindowsXP et 16% plus lent sous Vista.
