STEP 1: INSTALL THE DEBIAN UNIVERSAL OPERATING SYSTEM First of all shrink your Windows partition to make room for the new system. There is a tutorial at Howtoforge but take in consideration the possibility of dedicating a whole new hard disk to your GNU/Linux installation especially if you are new to this kind of systems. Now you need to download from here the Net Installation CD image (as of the moment I'm writing is called debian-40r1-i386-netinst.iso) and now you can burn the cd from this .iso image. Once you have your cd ready you need to boot your pc from this cd and once you have booted from CD you can see the first sceen with the boot: prompt. If you want to install installation in graphical mode you need to write “installgui” you can see this in the following screen and after that, jusy press your “Enter” key.

ArtistX is a free live GNU/Linux DVD which turns a common computer into a full multimedia production studio. It is based on Debian GNU/Linux and contains nearly all the available free audio, 2D and 3D graphics, and video software for the GNU/Linux computing platform. The Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD is a bootable CD/DVD that runs Linux directly from CD/DVD without installing (like Knoppix and many others). It is based on Scientific Linux (SL), which is recompiled from RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) sources. It uses Unification File System (unionfs) in case of SL4 and Another Unionfs (aufs) in case of SL5, allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one and squashfs providing on-the-fly decompression that allows to store 2GB software on a normal CD-ROM. The Live CD/DVDs were built using modified scripts from www.linux-live.org. Additionally the Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD can be used to setup a server for Diskless Client. The diskless clients will run Scientific Linux without a local Linux installation getting the operation system over the network (via NFS).

Instalei o kubuntu 7.04 (LIVE/DVD) em casa, baixei o DVD porque achei que teria "tudo" que eu precisasse lá, engano meu. Após a instalação, coloquei um filme pra assistir, quem disse que funcionou. O Kaffeine deu um erro dizendo que não tinha plugins pra processar //dev/dvd... (algo assim). Quando fui pro apt-get instalar o mplayer, quem disse que tinha. ah, eu não tenho internet em casa. A solução que encontrei foi baixar no trabalho (pelo site do mplayer) e levar pra casa, deu um trabalhão pra instalar (imagina o delay quando dá algom erro), mas instalei! Porém, o mplayer só me dá a opção de assistir vcd e vídeos no geral, controle pra dvd não tem, pelo menos na minha instalação, creio que está faltando plugins também. Bom isso tudo foi pra vocês entenderem a minha situação, preciso instalar pacotes e não tenho internet em casa. Pensei em baixar os pacotes (.deb) de algum repositório (p.e archive.ubuntu.com) e gravar em um dvd/cd, depois na minha casa fazer um apt-cdrom. mas tenho a impressão que isso não vai funcionar. Alguém tem alguma solução?
