Economic Pulse: Saturday Errands

February 22, 2009 Economic Pulse: Saturday Errands Charles Shaw wine displayed in a Trader Joe's ... Image via Wikipedia Shopping Frank- Naomi and I live in a small town Royal Oak Michigan-both of us have time and every day we go out at least for coffee-If i don't take a laptop we usually got to McDonalds and since we both have Kindles we sit and read-the place is usually busy with kids as well as retired folks ! They still serve one of the best cups of coffee anywhere and they have three chocolate chip cookies for a dollar-and the product is good-fast food in known for serving a percentage but McDonalds is cost conscious and always maintains a quality level above other food outlets-we get our local television from Detroit Stations and I have been watching the National Advertisments diminish and being replaced with infomercials-all the newpapers in Michigan have cut down delivery days and are losing readership- I don't really care since we both get our news Online and there are Online Magazines Like Zimbio which have ton's of content-The other Local coffee shops and most restuarants are as dead as Custer-We buy the a lot of food items at small middle eastern and oriental grocery stores where expecially vegetables are always fresh and priced right-Chicken and Meat in Middle Eastern Grocery stores is dressed according to dietary laws and they all sell Amish Chicken the best available. If we want deserts we buy the at a middle eastern bakery that ships world wide-http://www.shatila.com/ and is a short drive-One of the few stores alway busy is Trader Joes they are marketing a brand of wine Charles Shaw and I see people buying it in cases, we have bought it is a good brand-and they seem to sell a lot of well processed frozen items-I have noticed a lot of Trendy Brands are being replaced with private label- Wallmart are experts at quality control in store brand foods-and sell more television sets than any store we buy at-I noticed they had great pricing on a Netbook- I have A G-4 and a Macbook but will be buying a netbooks soon Walmart only has one brand and I am leaning toward's the Asus so I will probably get it from Amazon-Mr Eliason's shopping trips are a great read- Economic Pulse: Saturday Errands. follow me on my krumlr link Stumble It!

'On a Note of Triumph' : NPR

February 20, 2009 'On a Note of Triumph' : NPR Norman Corwin Image via Wikipedia Greatest Radio Show Ever As the end of World War II in Europe came in sight, Norman Corwin was asked to prepare a special broadcast, to be held ready for V-E Day. This is that broadcast. It is Corwin's masterpiece. Even after half a century, it is arguably the finest use of the radio medium ever achieved. "… a vast announcement, a terrific interrogatory, one of the all-time great American poems." – Poet Carl Sandburg NPR.org, May 26, 2005 · On May 8, 1945, 60 million Americans tuned in to hear On A Note of Triumph, Norman Corwin's radio masterpiece marking the end of World War II in Europe. Lauded by Carl Sandburg as "one of the all-time great American poems," it was the most listened-to radio drama in U.S. history. In the 1950’s I majored in Radio Tv and Film at the university of Miami [Fla] there were a lot of very talented folks in school with me, and one afternoon Dave Madden a classmate of mine who in later years was in the Partridge Family and Laugh In, listened to On A note Of Triumph-This was what radio used to be-it is important that if you study Communication Arts today you should listen to this-I follow Dave Winer on the internet and he seems to be a follower of all forms of media this is important to all of us-with the collapse of the Old Media we need a reference point- Norman Corwin celebrated his 97th birthday on May 3, 2007, and today lives in Los Angeles, keeping busy as always. He is still writing for radio, and is writer in residence at the Journalism School at USC. He writes articles for various publications, and is active in various organizations in and around the Los Angeles area. I really approve of this message-so did Lamont Cranston-The Shadow he Shadow is a collection of serialized dramas, originally on 1930s radio and then in a wide variety of media, that follow the exploits of fictional vigilante The Shadow.[2] One of the most famous pulp heroes of the 20th century, The Shadow has been featured in comic books, comic strips, television, video games, and at least seven motion pictures. The radio drama is well-remembered for those episodes voiced by Orson Welles. MarshalSandler.com is a playground of ideas, introductions, and synergies. What do you get when you add together Ian Schafer, Brian Morrissey and Gary Vaynerchuk? A lively discussion on social media and business participation. Immediately when I viewed the video on Friday I knew I wanted to take the opportunity to share it here. Not only are they great minds when it comes to social media, they make points that every business needs to hear. A few weeks ago I did a presentation about business blogging and the person that represents that to me? GaryVee. Not that every business should act the same way he does, that is not the point of social media. We should not try to be someone we are not. In my opinion the key to Gary’s success is his passion. That is what it is all about. I have a passion for Customer Service, and that comes out in everything I do." Truth Image representing Fred Wilson as depicted in ... Image via CrunchBase A Gift to our children- There are a few content creators that add family to their adventures in the Blogosphere,Fred Wilson,Frank Eliason,Louis Gray, Chris Brogan and I am sure there are more ! I grew up lucky since my parents could afford a private education for all three kids, and they were voracious readers. I can see my mother standing in the Kitchen Coffee cup in her left hand book in her right hand reading while standing and watching the stove ! Mom if you were here Naomi and I would buy you a Kindle! This particular post that I have re-blogged is an Every Parent Read Please do ! Truth FEB 10, 2009 11:22A.M. Last night Jessica showed me an essay she wrote after reading DBC Pierre’s Vernon God Little. In the opening paragraph she wrote: DBC Pierre explores the affect of media on citizens, and the greater theme of truth, or rather lack of truth, in everyday life. It was a proud moment for me, because if there is one thing I hope to pass onto my children, it’s the notion that there is no singular truth. I was at a dinner last week where much of the NYC digerati (young and old) were assembled in a lovely apartment on the upper east side. After dinner but before dessert, the hosts initiated a discussion of the obsession of the moment: whither media. At one point, the argument came out that we need journalism to surface the truth. At which point, I sort of lost my composure and argued loudly that there is no truth. There used to be a mantra at the upper right of this blog. I can’t remember what it said exactly, but the gist of it was that there is no absolute truth, just your truth and my truth. I post my truth here everyday and I hope you’ll drop by and share your truth with me. This is the promise of social media. It’s revolutionary. When you give every citizen in the world a printing press, you ought to expect revolution. And it is upon us. new place where each and everyone of us will report on our world and share it with others. Sharing is the new truth. One of my Favorite Bloggers wrote a nice post on Thomas put thomas l friedman in the Lijit search box on her site and you shall be rewarded http://gothamgal.blogs.com/ I like the fact that Gotham Gal and Her Husband http://www.avc.com/ give us a taste of Scrapple From The Apple-Scrapple is a savory mush of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and flour, often buckwheat flour. The mush is formed into a loaf, and slices of the scrapple are then fried before serving. Scraps of meat left over from butchering, not used or sold elsewhere, were made into scrapple to avoid waste. Scrapple is best known as a regional American food of Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. “Scrapple from the Apple” is a bebop composition by Charlie Parker, commonly regonized today as a jazz standard, written in F major. The song borrows its chord progression from “Honeysuckle Rose“, a common practice for Parker, as he based many of his successful tunes over already well-known chord changes.
