The Most Promising Web 2.0 Software of 2006 (web2.wsj2.com)

by 11 others
It's been almost three months since my last major roundup of Web 2.0 software and I thought it's about time to release another update. The pace of innovation in the next generation of online software has continued unabated and we've seen dozens upon dozens of new entries into the market since December. And while a few of the market niches are starting to fill up, almost as often as not these new software products are inventing completely new spaces in which to serve. It's been thrilling to watch TechCrunch and eHub continue to announce new product after new product. I personally get at least an e-mail a day asking me to take a look at new applications. This article will reward many of you who have waiting so patiently.

Top 10 Innovative Web 2.0 Applications of 2005

by 14 others
2005 also brought many "me too" companies. It seemed like every other Web 2.0 application was "The Best Social Bookmarking Site" or "The Best Startpage Site" or "Another Boring To-Do List site". My only hope is that this nonsense ends a quick death by the end of this month. I am optimistic that 2006 is the year of "Web 2.0 Innovation". It is the next logical step...and I anticipate it with great enthusiasm.

Making Web 2.0 Commercially Successful

Following up on this weekend's mainstream media discussion of Web 2.0 being a better, healthier boom than the original dot-com speculation frenzy, I've had some time to reflect on the ways that Web 2.0 software can be commercially successful. Certainly, the most popular model for most Web 2.0 startups themselves is through mergers and acquisitions. In this model, you typically build a successful service with a unique identity, some hip attitude, and attract a large user base and as long as you've done it cost effectively, the attention base of your users alone probably pays for the acquisition in the eyes of the buyer.

adaptive path ? experience attributes: crucial dna of web 2.0

by 7 others
Your instinct may tell you that some of the DNA-like attributes of Web 2.0 have been around for some time, and in truth, many have. So why didn’t we see Web 2.0 offerings popping up years ago? Because these older attributes, while significant, weren’t enough to produce viable Web 2.0 products.

Point, Click, Design

How do you create the future of Web apps? By accident. Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield (above) are the husband-and-wife team behind Flickr, the photo-sharing site that launched in February 2004 and quickly got so popular that Yahoo acquired it a year later. Flickr wasn't born as a fully realized idea--in fact, it wasn't even originally for photo sharing. But its building blocks make up a successful Web 2.0 application. Here's how it evolved.
